316L vs 304 Stainless Steel Jewellery: Which Should a Reseller Stock?

by Qimati Team 12 Oct 2026
316L vs 304 Stainless Steel Jewellery. Two gold-tone stainless steel kada bracelets side by side on a pale cream stone slab

Short answer: both are stainless steel and both carry the same 18kt gold-colour PVD finish, so they look identical on the shelf. 316L is the higher grade, with better corrosion resistance, and costs a little more per piece. 304 is the everyday grade and costs a little less. Resellers who serve sensitive-skin or premium customers lean on 316L; resellers who compete on price lean on 304. Most Qimati buyers stock both and let the customer decide.

What the grade numbers mean

304 and 316L are standard stainless steel alloys used far beyond jewellery. 304 is the common "18/8" stainless: roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, the same family used for kitchen sinks and cutlery. 316L adds 2 to 3% molybdenum and has a lower carbon content (the "L" stands for low carbon). Molybdenum improves resistance to chlorides, which is what sweat, sea water and swimming pools contain, and it is why 316L is the usual choice for watch cases, body jewellery and marine fittings.

In jewellery terms, that difference shows up over months of daily wear, not on day one. A 304 piece worn to the office and taken off at night behaves much like a 316L piece. A piece worn through sweat, gym sessions and showers will hold up longer in 316L. Neither grade is a substitute for basic care: the colour finish is a coating, and coatings last longer when they are kept dry and away from perfume and chemicals.

Prices are the per-piece wholesale prices shown on www.qimati.in for designs in stock in October 2026. Each listing states its grade, and the 316L collection and 304 collection are separated so you can buy by grade.

Does the finish differ between the two?

No. At Qimati both grades carry the same 18kt gold-colour PVD finish. PVD (physical vapour deposition) bonds the colour to the metal in a vacuum chamber instead of dipping the piece in a plating bath, which is why it resists tarnishing far better than standard electroplated fashion jewellery. The colour is a coating, not solid gold, and it is not waterproof. The honest way to describe it to your customer is "gold-tone, anti-tarnish stainless steel".

Because the finish is identical, you cannot tell 316L from 304 by looking at it. A magnet test does not settle it either; both grades are austenitic steels that are mostly non-magnetic, and either can pick up slight magnetism after cold working. Rely on the grade stated in the listing and buy from a supplier who states it on every design.

Which grade sells better?

It depends on who buys from you, not on the steel. Three patterns come up again and again among Qimati resellers:

  • Price-led Instagram and WhatsApp sellers mostly stock 304. The lower cost per piece gives room for offers and combo deals, and the look is the same.
  • Boutiques and gift shops often stock 316L for necklaces, rings and earrings that touch skin all day, and 304 for anklets, kadas and seasonal pieces.
  • Sellers who get asked "will it react with my skin?" keep a 316L range ready as the answer. 316L is the alloy used in body jewellery, and most people wear it comfortably. That is not a medical claim; if a customer has a known metal allergy, suggest a short trial.

The margin maths is similar either way. A 304 necklace bought at ₹125 and retailed at ₹299, and a 316L necklace bought at ₹160 and retailed at ₹399, leave you a comparable rupee margin per piece. Choose by what your customers ask for and what they are willing to pay, then test the other grade with part of your next order.

Care instructions that apply to both

  • Take jewellery off before swimming, bathing and exercise.
  • Keep perfume, lotion, hair spray and cleaning chemicals away from it.
  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after wear and store pieces separately so they do not scratch each other.
  • Do not describe either grade as waterproof. "Anti-tarnish with care" is accurate; a promise that it will not tarnish at all is not.

What Qimati stocks in each grade

The 316L range covers necklaces, earrings, rings, kada bracelets, chain bracelets and watches. The 304 range covers necklaces, kada bracelets, anklets, hand chains and more; all current hand chains are 304. Nose pins and the Indian jewellery range are brass, not steel. Every design states its material on the product page, and the minimum order is ₹1,000 on the cart total, so you can mix 316L and 304 designs freely in one order.

Frequently asked questions

Is 316L better than 304 for jewellery?

316L resists corrosion better, particularly against sweat and salt water, and is the alloy used for watch cases and body jewellery. For a piece worn daily and kept dry, 304 performs well too. "Better" depends on the wearer and the price point; many resellers stock both.

Is 316L stainless steel hypoallergenic?

316L wears comfortably against skin for most people and is the common recommendation for sensitive-skin customers. No metal is suitable for everyone, so avoid absolute claims; suggest a short trial to anyone with a known allergy.

Does the gold colour wear off?

PVD colour holds up far better than standard electroplating, but it is a coating and it responds to how a piece is treated. Kept dry, away from chemicals and wiped after wear, it keeps its colour through regular use. Swimming, showering and perfume shorten its life on either grade.
